I see what you're saying about the 'trash a score card" cards as well. As for the auto trash/cycle vs asking your opponent, I just don't think the mechanism is game-interactive enough for the physical overhead of the mechanism - in other words it's not bad, but it's kind of a PITA and it makes the game take longer. I might try it some more and see if it's really annoying to other players or not.Seth Jaffeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449603052617321357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4678989644685757600.post-79584482920888526502010-09-25T21:06:58.623-04:002010-09-25T21:06:58.623-04:00I'd like to see some stats on Dominion. It just seems to not entirely be like an auction then. In Vegas Showdown or Homesteaders you often bid up the other players just to make sure they don't get anything too cheap. Why would that not work in Amun-Re?

I'll probably play it as written first, but I really don't see what distinguishes the bidding parts of it from the other games mentioned.Isamoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17246918125961752266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4678989644685757600.post-15702299292790008382010-08-24T21:58:19.074-04:002010-08-24T21:58:19.074-04:00Hah, indeed Sean. I thin...Hah, indeed Sean. I could give that a go.

I think the real problem is that you just don't want to use so many cards that hand size gets interesting with 6 players. If 6 players each had 11+ cards, hands would just take forever.

So I personally think it's more of a game style limitation instead of an issue with the games we play. 6-players is just going to be rough.

Although, we did do some Shangyou the other day, and that was a fun change of pace.Isamoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17246918125961752266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4678989644685757600.post-11492205947379451302010-08-20T16:54:56.413-04:002010-08-20T16:54:56.413-04:00Y'know, Sheamus, now that you're a game de...Y'know, Sheamus, now that you're a game designer, perhaps you could take a stab at designing a 6 player partnership trick-taker that you'll like. It really makes you bid the right amount in the first place, and there is nothing random about which province you get.

If you like auction games where you can bid low on what you want and hope to get it at a bargain because noone outbid you, then Amun-Re might not be for you. The mechanism forces you to make a real bid by really punishing you for underbidding when you get outbid.

There is a power card that allows you to rebid, so if you get that you could try to be a cheapskate, knowing you could use the card to re-bid on the same auction (in fact, you could bait someone into overbidding you but underbidding overall, then surprise them with that power card!).

In Homesteaders you can take debt, so there's theoretically infinite money. You can re-bid in that game because the focus is different - it allows you to consider whether you are willing to take debt when someone outbids you... it's still good to make the 'correct' bid first, but since you can always take debt you can always afford to bid up. I think Alex has written something about that somewhere - maybe on BGG? If not, maybe that would be a good question to ask him!Seth Jaffeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449603052617321357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4678989644685757600.post-34532295324982773352010-07-07T13:55:52.800-04:002010-07-07T13:55:52.800-04:00Sheamus,

I can say though that there's really not 'different was to get ships' in the game. There kind of is, you can take a ship as a reward when sending a ship out to sail, that's an option, but mostly you get ships by placing in the ship space and buying them. Similarly, while you can get 1 Crew or Captain as a reward when shipping (instead of a ship), you mostly buy Crew/Captains at the worker space for that (though for Crew there's also one other way to get them). Vasco Da Gama is all about the resolution order really. You have to organize certain things (ship, crew) such that you can set sail, and each step along the way the resolution order can be a really big deal. You need money for everything, so ricking big bucks to undercut someone for a better ship or better sailing choices can be a really hard choice. There are also ways you can be money-efficient at the cost of worker placements and ways you can be placement efficient at the cost of money, so that can be interesting.

As I said, so far I like the game alright - it's not the "mediocre euro" I expected.Seth Jaffeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449603052617321357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4678989644685757600.post-54929304007002194862010-05-07T15:55:53.404-04:002010-05-07T15:55:53.404-04:00Maybe Zheng Shengyou? It was when I was thinking a lot about building a game based on a core mechanism that is itself an established game. There are many games which could be described as a 'clever mechanism in search of an actual game' - Coloretto, Liar's Dice, Dominion, etc. Zooloretto does a good job of making a gem out of Coloretto. I have tried my hand at making a game using Liar's Dice as a central mechanism. I'm currently working on a civ game where your abilities and the potency of your actions are controlled by a deck which behaves like you might see in Dominion...

And one time I considered a game based on the mechanism that is Reiner Knizia's eXXtra. Your idea sounds similar to mine, which was that you would place dice on particular spaces which had actions or effects associated with them, and you could boot someone else off of that space if you placed a die with a larger number on it there. I will have to dig up those notes and see what that was all about, because I remember thinking that was a neat idea.Seth Jaffeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449603052617321357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4678989644685757600.post-88065072942233188152010-01-27T20:39:49.162-05:002010-01-27T20:39:49.162-05:00I think you're absolutely right Kris. Why not hide it from the student so that they don't know at what point to tank the answer?

2) Can you give the student a penalty for not guessing as well, to keep them from tanking?

3) Suppose the Student and the master were each going to split 3d6 points - and the more guesses it takes the student, the more points the master gets... start with all the points being the student's and for each incorrect guess or koan, 1 point moves over to the Master... therefore the student wants to get it in as few guesses as possible (but will obviously need to get some info somehow), and the Master wants the student to get it in as close to the roll as possible.

I guess that leaves the issue with tanking after a certain point. Maybe if the solution isn't found at ALL, then it counts as 1 "Bad Omen," and after 3 Bad Omens, both players lose - or something like that.

I think hiding the 3d6 roll would be a good start.

- SethSeth Jaffeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12449603052617321357noreply@blogger.com
